Kelowna Hyundai and Buy Direct Truck Centre have together donated $20,000 to the Okanagan College Foundation’s Bright Horizons Building for Skills campaign in support of the new Trades Training Complex at the College’s Kelowna campus.
“We believe it is important to give back to our community, and for that reason we are very proud to support Okanagan College in building for the future with its new Trades Training Complex,” said John Kot, owner of Kelowna Hyundai & Buy Direct Truck Centre.
“Skilled technicians play a vital role in our industry, and we are so pleased that this gift will assist the next generation of automotive technicians training at the College.”
The new three-story Trades Training tower along KLO Road will open to students later this spring.
“Whenever a local employer chooses to give back to the College, it sends a message to our students that the valley’s industry believes in the high quality of training being offered here,” says Steve Moores, Okanagan College’s Dean of Trades and Apprenticeship. “The generous help of these two dealerships is greatly appreciated and builds on incredible support from the automotive sector over the past year-and-a-half.”
A completely renovated automotive shop is now in operation, along with brand-new classroom spaces geared up for training the automotive tradespeople of tomorrow. Support from auto dealers has been critical to the renovation of this space,
notes Dennis Gabelhouse, Chair of the Bright Horizons campaign.
“Since our campaign launched in the fall of 2014, support from individuals, families, and businesses in the automotive sector has been remarkable,” says Gabelhouse. “More than $780,000 of our $7-million goal has come from this sector, to date. This donation is yet another example of a local employer looking to help the next wave of students put their education in gear.”
The new facilities at B.C.’s second largest trades training institution are coming on stream at a crucial time for students and employers.
Between now and 2024, it is projected that there will be job openings for more than 10,750 tradespeople in the Okanagan, including more than 1,100 automotive service technicians. In this same time period, openings are expected for more than 160,000 tradespeople province-wide.
When completed, the $33-million, 10,000 sq. metre renovation and expansion project will see decades old shops updated to match the same level of sustainable construction found within the new complex. An overall goal of achieving the coveted LEED Platinum certification has been set.
The provincial government has committed $28 million to the project. The Okanagan College Foundation is aiming to raise an additional $7 million, which includes $5 million for capital construction and $2 million to support students and programming. June 4, 2015 – With the support of local residents and the generosity of John Kot & Guy Lemieux, owners of Kelowna Hyundai and Buy Direct Truck Centre, Operation 200 was a great success. This was the 2nd year that both dealerships hosted Operation 200, with the goal to sell 200 vehicles in 30 days, resulting in a donation to the New Interior Heart & Surgical Centre (IHSC). Last year, the dealerships presented the IHSC with a cheque of $13,000, and this year they donated $100,000.
“Supporting the local community is important to our business, and after three successful years of business under our management, the residents of Kelowna have been nothing but welcoming, and we look forward to giving back,” said John Kot. “We are honoured to support the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation in their efforts to provide the highest level of medical care in Kelowna and the Okanagan.” The
IHSC will be a state of the art facility featuring 15 surgical operating suites for 12 surgical specialties including advanced open-heart surgery. It will provide timely, much needed surgeries to patients who in the past may have had to travel outside the region for this level of health care. While the IHSC’s government funding is substantial, not all costs are covered; new equipment and enhanced services are needed.

July 9, 2014 – Following up on a successful Operation 200 promotion, where Kelowna Hyundai and Buy Direct Truck Centre donated $10,100 to the new Interior Heart and Surgical Centre in April, the two dealerships decide to reward one lucky customer with $10,000 cash.
On July 9, 2014, the giveaway was held as a reverse draw, with a 1 out of 100 chance of winning the grand prize, and 9 out of 100 chance of winning other prizes ranging from $50 gift cards to $250 gift cards. For those customers who didn’t win prizes, they got to snack on refreshments, listen to live music, and embrace the enthusiasm of the other guests.
The goal of the $10,000 cash giveaway was to reward one lucky customer for their loyalty, and provide an entertaining night for the other eligible customers. The lucky winner was Henrick Dekline, who was represented by his father-in-law Randy.

Hyundai Highest Ranked Non-Luxury Brand as Genesis, Elantra, and Accent Top their Segments in 2014 J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study
MARKHAM, Ontario (June 18, 2014) – J.D. Power today recognized Hyundai as the top-performing non-luxury brand for initial quality and presented three Hyundai vehicles – 2014 Genesis, 2014 Elantra and 2014 Accent – their highest award in their respective segments in the U.S. Hyundai ranked fourth overall in initial quality, climbing six spots from last year. In total, Hyundai had six vehicles in the Top Three positions in their segments, including two second place finishes for Santa Fe and Sonata and a third-place finish for Equus. This year’s results mark the third time Hyundai has been the highest-ranked non-luxury brand in the past 10 years, and the third time it finished among the Top Four brands overall.
The award comes from the J.D. Power 2014 U.S. Initial Quality StudySM (IQS). Now in its 28th consecutive year, IQS is the industry benchmark for new-vehicle quality, measured at 90 days of ownership.
“Receiving IQS awards in multiple vehicle segments acknowledges Hyundai’s commitment to quality and customer satisfaction across our entire product lineup, not just our luxury vehicles,” said Don Romano, President and CEO, Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. “Today’s awards are a true reflection of the hard work and dedication of all the Hyundai team members in our factories around the globe.”
The IQS serves as the industry benchmark for new-vehicle quality and has proven to be an excellent predictor of long-term reliability, which may significantly impact new-vehicle purchase decisions. The focus of the study is model-level performance and comparison of individual models to similar models in respective segments, which helps manufacturers worldwide to design and produce higher-quality vehicles.
In addition to victories in three vehicle segments, the Hyundai brand substantially reduced problems per 100 vehicles and finished fourth overall, gaining six rank positions compared with 2013. The Hyundai overall score was 94 problems per 100 vehicles, 12 fewer than last year and 22 fewer problems than the industry average which actually deteriorated three problems per 100 compared with 2013. Also, Genesis scored back-to-back segment while Accent, with a mere 65 problems-per-100, was the second highest performing vehicle in the study.

Kelowna Hyundai and Buy Direct Truck Centre have donated over $10,000 to the new Interior Heart and Surgical Centre, to be put towards state of the art medical equipment, specifically in the Heart Centre.
The month long initiative to raise money was coordinated with the dealership’s Operation 200 promotion. For every vehicle sold during the month of April, John Kot and Guy Lemieux, owners of both dealerships, promised to donate $50 per vehicle, with the goal of selling 200 vehicles, to have a grand total donation of $10,000. Between both locations, a total of 202 vehicles were sold.
The Interior Heart and Surgical Centre (IHSC) will open in early 2015, to provide timely, much needed surgeries to patients who in the past may have had to travel outside the region for this level of health care. IHSC will provide the highest level of medical care ever seen in the Interior of British Columbia.
“We are proud to support the IHSC in their efforts to help residents gain treatment locally,” said John Kot, President of Kelowna Hyundai and Buy Direct Truck Centre. “As my daughter has been affected by a serious heart condition since birth, I can sympathize with families having a sick family member that requires very specific care.”
