2019 Hyundai Kona Electric Range

The new 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric is a compact electric CUV that offers 400 km of estimated range thanks to a high-efficiency 150 kW electric motor powertrain (201-horsepower, 291 pound-feet torque) and a high-voltage 64 kWh lithium-ion battery.

The 2019 Kona Electric features a Level-II onboard charger (7.2 kW) that can achieve a full charge in nine hours and 50 minutes. The standard Level-III DC-fast-charging system (110 kW) is also standard on Kona Electric models and offers a full charge in just 55 minutes!

Additionally, Canadian Kona Electric models include a standard heating pump that improves the HVAC system by reducing its power demand, meaning that cold weather driving won’t affect your total range nearly as much!

“Our new Kona Electric crossover is a stylish and efficient compact CUV, tailored to the needs of customers who pursue eco-focused lifestyles requiring generous range. We’re confident it will set new standards for the electric-propelled compact CUV segment, with outstanding range flexibility, appealing design, cutting-edge connectivity and class-leading available safety features.”

Purchased Hyundai Kona Electric Ultimate last week in BC. Started my 200km journey to test this car with 373km battery reserve. Temperature -3 degrees (celsius). Drove in Eco mode with indoor temparature around 17 degrees. Lucky to get back with 52 km. That is 121 kms from predicted range and about 40% below the “estimated” range even with uncomfortable settings in the effort to make it back. Condidering BC distances we need much more accurate and honest predictions.

I live in Ontario and took delivery of my Kona electric in early February. My car has more than lived up to my expectations of range. I have driven my car 6400 km so far. I drive almost exclusively in eco mode and with a fairly conservative driving style. What I found was that I got ranges in the cold winter months pretty well equal to the advertised 415 km from a 100% charge. The actual driving distance has been very close to the car’s predicted range. Now that the weather has warmed up over 15 deg C, I am finding that the range predicted by the car as well as my actual driving distance has improved at least 15% over cold weather conditions. Yesterday a 100% charge gave me a predicted range of 470 km, and driving 250 km over rolling hills north east of Toronto left me with 53% battery charge remaining. I gained range over the course of the trip, and that was with some use of fan and AC. Temperature was 16 – 23 deg C.
Hills are a great enemy of range in any car, fossil fuelled or electric, so I suspect that the previous reviewer had such a bad experience in BC because he was tackling some pretty severe grades along the route. Perhaps, too, he was driving pretty fast.
